Hispanic Festival Outreach:
Fond du Lac's AnnualHispanic American Festival
Of Hope
Festival aims to promote services, Hispanic
culture
For the second time this month, racial groups
are reaching out to promote understanding in the Fond du Lac area.
The first Hispanic-American Festival of Hope
will be held at Lakeside Park on Saturday, Oct. 20.
The free community festival on Oven Island
will feature food, entertainment, children's events, a job fair, a
1O-mile walk and a three-mile run. Camille Solberg, who brought
together a board of directors to organize the festival, calls it a
day for the Hispanic people of Fond du Lac.
"We found a void and want to fill it," she
said. She and Socorro Williams, who is helping with festival
organization, pointed out that the Hispanic population in Fond du
Lac and the immediate area has grown significantly. "But in talking
about it," Williams said, "we realized that (many of them) don't
integrate into the culture. They are missing a lot of the services."
One of the missions of the festival will be to
help make the Hispanic community aware of the services. "Changing
Lives for a Lifetime" has been chosen as the festival theme.
Organizations like Advocap, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities,
Bethany House, FAVR, the county Public Health Nursing Service,
Lutherans for Life and a number of local churches will be taking
part in events of the day.
No admission will be charged. Events will be
held on Oven Island from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the walk and run to
start before the festival, at 9:45 a.m.
Registration forms for the walk and run,
called the first "Caminata for Hope," are available at the Fond du
Lac Area Association of Commerce office, Fond du Lac Convention and
Visitors Bureau office, La Esperanza Supermarket, Print Right Inc.
and KFIZ Radio.
During the program portion of the festival,
scheduled for 11 a.m., Fond du Lac City Council President Marty Ryan
will read a proclamation marking the third Saturday of every October
as Hispanic American Day in Fond du Lac
